A story of healing and a guide to seeking justice after sexual abuse from Brooke Axtell, one of the foremost survivor experts on sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking

When Brooke Axtell was seven years old, her nanny subjected her to sex trafficking. Today, she is a champion and advocate for women around the world who have experienced sexual violence and trauma.

Beautiful Justice shares Brooke's own gripping story, both the trauma of sex trafficking and also her pathway through healing, moving on, and reclaiming power. Along the way, she imparts warm wisdom for others who have experienced similar violence, providing lessons from her own life and from the thousands of women, advocates, and lawmakers she's spoken with. Relying on her own experiences and a keen awareness of public policy, she provides a clear-eyed awareness of the ways that our culture and government work against women experiencing violence around the world.

Inspiring and powerfully redemptive, Brooke encourages readers to take part in a creative resistance as a path to justice.

"As a social worker and therapist who has worked with sexual abuse survivors, I would recommend this book to all of my clients, who have experienced that, as a must read. Not only is Brooke Axtell an accomplished poet, she also narrates her story of heartbreaking pain from being trafficked at the age of seven through her physically and emotionally abusive relationship with her boyfriend, as an adult. Through her journey, we witness her introspection, healing, and then liberation from the trauma that held her hostage for most of her life. Beautiful Justice is ultimately an uplifting book, concluding with her wisdom in the final two sections so aptly titled “Art of Survivorship” followed by “A Healing Guide for Survivors”. Highly recommend."

Beautiful Justice Reclaiming My Worth After Human Trafficking and Sexual Abuse edition by Brooke Axtell Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

  • I found this book so heartwarming and at the same time a very good “how to” book. Brooke has shown the way to so many victims of sexual trafficking as well as domestic violence. She has risen in her resolve to help not only herself, but show the world how powerful words and work can lead to finding your way to a peaceful and productive life.
  • Beautiful Justice is a beautifully written memoir by a powerful woman who is devoting her life to helping survivors or human trafficking and gender-based violence. Axtell's memoir is an invaluable resource for survivors, advocates, and anyone who wants to be an ally in the fight to end human trafficking.
  • As a social worker and therapist who has worked with sexual abuse survivors, I would recommend this book to all of my clients, who have experienced that, as a must read. Not only is Brooke Axtell an accomplished poet, she also narrates her story of heartbreaking pain from being trafficked at the age of seven through her physically and emotionally abusive relationship with her boyfriend, as an adult. • Deeply moving and beautifully written, Brooke Axtell embraces those of us who have suffered abuse and offers herself as a loving and knowledgeable guide toward self-love.
  • I couldn't put this compelling book down! The only thing that is more powerful than reading the book is listening to Brooke tell her story on audio book. I am in awe of her resilience and ability to create beauty out of the ashes of her life.
    Highly Recommend!
  • Pre-ordered Beautiful Justice by Brooke Axtell because I've long been a fan of her poetry and her advocacy for survivors of trafficking. Received the book on its publication day and I'm more than halfway through reading it a day later. Brooke writes like the artist she is about her incredibly harrowing experiences, weaving in her poetry as well as occasional data on sexual and domestic violence. She writes with an earnestness I find really refreshing; she's clear that her story doesn't end in trauma, but that she can use her voice to amplify others' and to organize for healing, which is its own kind of justice. I'm deeply moved by her story, and I'm swept along by her writing. Recommend.
  • Although this memoir is a searing, bone shattering account of sexual abuse and human trafficking, although recounts nearly unbearable pain written in the granite of suffering, it is more about the resilience of the human spirit, the often artistic responses to trauma, and, finally, the necessary step to recovery - joining or founding a community of fellow sufferers that demands recognition and encourages others to seek justice for the victims. I know Brooke, glancingly, through other friends and as a sometime contributor to the Forbes.com column my business partner and I wrote for three years. She is Indefatigable, wise, tough and talented in spoken, written and sung calls for justice. For those who have never been part of a recovery community may believe recovery is all about self-pity. Read Beautiful Justice and you will find that it's all about love, service, creative expression and, yes, laughter. As a recovering alcoholic (25 years!) I have read WAY too many memoirs of recovery. But because I know Brooke and have been a rapt observer of her spoken word work, I did the uncharacteristic thing of buying another book about recovery. But this book is not just about recovery. It's about a feminist revolution, one that digs far deeper than the political issues of wage gaps and the bodily integrity, autonomy and boundary setting of the pro-choice movement. This revolution applies to all women regardless of their political stances. But most of all, it is a song, a dance, a celebration of not just one woman, but all of us.
  • This book tells the story of Brooke Axtell's journey through human trafficking and sexual abuse starting at the tender age of 7.
She is now an advocate for women around the world who have gone thru this trauma.
She shares the poetry she writes in part of the book and she is also a very spiritual woman.
I was moved by her ability to prevail after all she's been through.
Whether you need particular help in this area you will be touched in many ways by her story.
    Recommended.
