When Ray Ciancaglini was sixteen, he took a hard blow to the head in a boxing match. With the misconception that you had to be knocked out to sustain a concussion, he stepped into the ring again the following week and suffered a second concussion while still in the recovery phase of the initial one. The injurious effects to Ray's brain from this "second impact" altered the course of his existence forever.

Andy Siegel is a New York City personal injury lawyer who has dedicated his legal career to representing survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI). He is also the author of The Tug Wyler Mystery Series, a collection of emotionally charged and thought provoking medical-legal thrillers. With his highly acclaimed debut novel Suzy's Case Andy personified the intensity of the experience of TBI survivors and their families.

Ray and Andy have collaborated on a joint mission to raise awareness about the dangers of concussion and to encourage a safe return to athletic competition after sustaining a head injury.

Second Impact The Ray Ciancaglini Story chronicles the account of a young boy's life whose future had been filled with tremendous promise tragically sent off course by his instinctive competitive spirit. Written in the third person, each chapter ends with Ray's comments on those life events highlighting the mistakes he made. This unique format allows the reader to follow the story in the form of a novel yet benefit from Ray's insightful reflections in retrospect.

Second Impact Andy Siegel Books Reviews

  • I’ve know Ray for my entire life and knew a few details about his story prior to reading. The book does a great job explaining the details of the ups and downs of both his career and his life, in almost a movie-like fashion. This book is a must read for anyone who participates in athletics, especially contact sports, including parents of these athletes. Both Ray and the author do a great job getting the main point across about the misconceptions of concussions, as well as the consequences. Although heartbreaking at times, I’m glad it helped him find his true calling of helping others by forming The Second Impact, writing this book and speaking to student athletes around the country. I truly believe this book will accomplish its goal of raising awareness and ultimately save careers and lives. Great job Ray and Andy!
  • I read Second Impact on vacation last week and I enjoyed it very much. Given the "concussion awareness" theme of the book, I thought it would be more of an academic read. However, Andy Siegel's incredible story telling transforms the inspirational life story of Ray Ciancaglini's in to a narrative you can't put down. He also does something incredibly creative I've never seen before. Each chapter represents one of fifteen "rounds" in Ray's life. At then end of each chapter are autobiographical comments from Ciancaglini. As I progressed through each chapter, I found myself looking forward to the commentary, always a personal reflection on the chapter. Each commentary was just enough to be interesting, never overdone. I can't recall every reading a biography sprinkled with autobiographical content, giving the impression the subject is reading along the book with you. I've ready and enjoyed several of Siegel's novels...hope he produces more biographies!
  • This is a book that should be read by parents, coaches and other instructors, as student athletes, by themselves cannot make the right choices regarding head injury. Everyone's awareness levels will be significantly enhanced by this true story.
  • Heartwarming true story of a loving family and unbridled ambition of a young man destined for a great boxing career. His mission now to spare others from the damage done to his life . Remarkable story .
  • Great book about an inspiring figure. A must read for young athletes. A warning to parents, teachers, and coaches about the dangers of head injuries and the repercussions of failing to identify the symptoms.
  • Book chronicles the intense struggles both physically and emotionally of a one-time prize-fighter who never questioned his convictions. Each chapter is unique. A riveting account of courage and tenacity; his refusal not to quit knowing the climb was demanding, and that he might never reach the top; climbed it anyways! Loved the feel good side of this story especially the family (wife in particular) her beliefs and motivation which led them into forming a thriving organization raising awareness toward student athletes on the lifelong consequences of concussion in sports. Absolutely worthy of reading.
  • This is a important and powerful read about determination, courage, grace, commitment and the deep, enduring love of two extraordinary people, Ray and Patti, who are now dedicating their lives to preventing even one more young athlete from a sports related traumatic brain injury. It is heartwarming, heart breaking, inspiring, uplifting and hard to put down I highly recommend it for everyone but it is essential for the parents of young athletes! This book will save lives!
