E.E. Cummings is without question one of the major poets of this century, and this volume, first published in 1959, is indispensable for every lover of modern lyrical verse. It contains one hundred of Cummings’s wittiest and most profound poems, harvested from thirty-five of the most radically creative years in contemporary American poetry. These poems exhibit all the extraordinary lyricism, playfulness, technical ingenuity, and compassion for which Cummings is famous. They demonstrate beautifully his extrapolations from traditional poetic structures and his departures from them, as well as the unique synthesis of lavish imagery and acute artistic precision that has won him the adulation and respect of critics and poetry lovers everywhere.

100 Selected Poems e e cummings 9780802130723 Books Reviews

  • Hi,
I enjoy this book. Great poet. Buy it for the quality of prose.
After searching the reviews using binding nothing came up. I'm surprised. Grove Press did a terrible job with the quality of the binding. Every page is creased in the middle, it opens reluctently, and closes too fast. It is not comfortable to read. Can't help but notice the cover is perfect after all these years while the pages seem recycled and glued together.
  • This his best collection of poems
He hooked me in high school
  • I purchased this book after reading the poem nobody loses all the time. I enjoy the way Cummings plays with words and uses unconventional syntax. His love poems are very good. I enjoy this little book a lot.
  • For anyone who dismisses cummings as a lightweight poet toying with typography, this book will be an eye-opener. The best of these poems are thoroughly endearing; full of warmth, freshness, and humor. Some readers will be surprised to learn that cummings is especially fine in the love poems, with memorable lines such as "since feeling is first / who pays any attention / to the syntax of things / will never wholly kiss you;"
At the same time, unfortunately, this collection provides numerous examples of cummings' more irritating work. Virtually all of the best poems are in the first half of this chronological volume; after that, cummings devolves into increasingly tiresome verbal gimmicks. The actual content in these later poems is slight, and the self-congratulatory tone becomes grating. Nonetheless, given the high quality of the early poetry, this book remains a firm recommendation.
  • Glad to be able to replace my lost copy of this beautiful book.
  • Glad this collection remains in print. It was the first collection of cummings I ever owned back in the 1970s.
  • I have bought this book 5 times in my life having lost copys to friends and ex-girl friends who do not want to give it back. I keep buying it even though I have the complete works of ee cummings at home. It is a small distilled and potent book. Like a glass of hard-lemonade in the sunshine.
These poems are his less language experiments and more poetry. the book includes Poems such as He said she said and Some where I have traveled boyond any experience.
The poems are so well crafted and precise yet emotional. The rythum of these poems is also captivating. Cummings is an artist of words who with 50 word may be able to beat any picture.
  • "No one, not even the rain, has such small hands." That was written by E E Cummings. I only have a few poetry books and this is one of them now. Cummings was a romantic and magician with words. This little book is perfect as it is easy to take along with me anywhere just in case I get caught in the rain.
