She closed her eyes and tipped her head. For a moment that seemed to last for eternity, she waited. Then she felt his breath get closer and then he kissed her. She eased into the kiss, but he edged back.

A heartwarming WWII love story, Sandhill Dreams was a finalist in the 2009 American Christian Fiction Writers’ Carol Awards for short historical fiction.

Lainie Gardner once dreamed of becoming a nurse. Of serving her country. Of doing something important in the war. But rheumatic fever changed all that, and instead of running home to her parents’ coddling, Lainie is determined to find a war job at Fort Robinson in Nebraska's sandhills, where she meets a soldier with his own broken dreams.

Tom Hamilton has feared dogs since he was bitten as a child, but his assignment at Fort Robinson is training war dogs and their handlers. Surely the Army has another use for him, but he’s trapped in a job he can’t stand in an out-of-the-way outpost. Every day is a reminder of his cowardice. Who would want to build a future with a man like him? Getting to know Lainie is a welcome distraction from the work that causes so much turmoil.

Is it possible new dreams will bring Lainie and Tom more joy than they ever imagined? Or will their fears hold them apart?

  • Lainie a life she knew before she got sick, now not having the stamina for being a nurse. Going to Crawford to free a man to go fight. A small extension of the fort, and a few ranches. Unloading dog crates, she asked, and Thomas dropped the crate. She wonders why here in Nebraska. as is Thomas, the army thought he would best serve the army by handling the dogs. Lainie acted without a plan of a job, to sleep. He then mentions the hordes of women at the fort, and within a couple of weeks married. She was determined to find work, instead of going back home and daddy. Good plot and characters, doing jobs needed.
  • This was the sequel to Canteen Dreams. I enjoyed both but liked Canteen Dreams better.
Light and easy reading. If you haven't read Canteen Dreams, it is hard to get into the characters right away.
  • This book must have a lot of research to know about the days W W2 I love reading and understanding how hard times but also the fun in those days were filled with hard work but the innocent times of dancing and drug stores with soda fountains. I of course enjoyed the romance and complications it holds your interest till the end.
  • I did not enjoy this as much as the first novel in the series.Lainies character seemed a little weak and spoiled. She was not someone I could relate to.
  • What an interesting story about a young woman. Her name is Lainie, and from the very beginning you know this will be a good read. Lainie has just recuperated from rheumatic fever, been honorably and medically discharged from the military, loses her dreams of being a nurse helping in the war effort, and going someplace she's never been before to find a job. All because she came down with rheumatic fever. She is very weak, very alone, yet very brave. She's willing to do everything she possibly can to land a job to support herself and acts upon her plan instead of retuning home to daddy.
This story shows a very determined woman who is bound to get a job. Even I was encouraged that she was gonna make it she was so persistent. And of course she wins.
I gave the story five stars because it had a good plot and showed a well-rounded couple of interesting characters. This was a nice clean story any teen could read.
  • I’m so glad I read this book! The characters are fleshed out and believable, and I teamed up with Lainey right away. I learned things about WWII I never knew - for instance, the intense training of such huge numbers of war dogs! It is not only a fascinating book, it is one that tugs at your heart. I highly recommend this book!
  • I've read many books on World War two. This I've read about the defense dogs. The book is good, well written. An easy read.
  • A sweet love story woven through some of Nebraska's history during WWII--where war dogs were trained at Fort Robinson, and glider pilots were trained, and the famous North Platte Canteen along the railroad for traveling soldiers.
